bạn có thể bắt sự kiện ở key listener hoặc mouse listener nếu người dùng click chọn File==> New , hoặc bấm ctrl + n

Mình làm như sau :
private DefaultStyledDocument doc;
private DocumentListener doclistener;
private JMenuItem getMnuItemNew() {
if (mnuItemNew == null) {
mnuItemNew = new JMenuItem();
mnuItemNew.setText("New");
mnuItemNew.addActionListener(new java.awt.event.ActionListener() {
public void actionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent e) {
newDoc();
}

});
}
return mnuItemNew;
}
//Method to create new documents
public void newDoc() {

if(Document.TitleProperty.isEmpty()){
initDoc();

}
doclistener = new DocumentListener() {//--tới đây hem bít làm sao luôn ^^

@Override
public void removeUpdate(DocumentEvent arg0) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub

}

@Override
public void insertUpdate(DocumentEvent arg0) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub

}

@Override
public void changedUpdate(DocumentEvent arg0) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub

}
